сокр USMCСоздан 10 ноября 1775 по решению Континентального конгресса [ Continental Congresses]. По Закону о национальной безопасности 1947 [National Security Act of 1947] - самостоятельный род войск в подчинении Министерства ВМС [ Department of the Navy]. В состав Корпуса входят сухопутные и военно-воздушные силы, прошедшие специальную подготовку. С 1978 командующий Корпусом морской пехоты [ Commandant, Marine Corps] - полноправный член Комитета начальников штабов [ Joint Chiefs of Staff]. Во время второй мировой войны численность Корпуса составляла около 485 тыс. человек. Корпус сыграл важную роль в войнах в Корее [ Korean War], во Вьетнаме [ Vietnam War], в Персидском заливе [ Gulf War], при вторжении на Гренаду [ Invasion of Grenada] и в др. операциях.
